Every DJ profile shows an AVERAGE RATE per hour. It's the number clients anchor on, and it's worth knowing what it does and doesn't tell you.
It's an average
What the DJ typically charges. Their actual price for your event comes on the proposal and can be higher or lower depending on the date, the distance, and what you're asking for.
What it excludes
- Travel — a separate line on your proposal
- Extras — lighting, MC services, a photobooth
- Tax, where it applies
So the rate is a starting point, not a quote.
"(Non-negotiable)"
Some profiles show this next to the rate. It means the DJ doesn't discount, and asking probably won't get you anywhere.
Without it, there may be room — particularly for a longer booking or a quiet date. Asking politely costs nothing.
Comparing DJs on rate
The rate is a poor comparison tool on its own. Two things distort it:
Hours. A DJ at a higher rate for four hours can cost less than a cheaper DJ for eight.
What's included. One DJ's base rate may include lighting and a microphone that another charges separately for. The higher rate can be the better value.
Compare Total Due on actual proposals. That's the only fair comparison.
What the rate does signal
A rate well below others in your area sometimes means a newer DJ building a reputation, which can be a genuine bargain. It can also mean less experience with events like yours.
A rate well above the rest usually means established, in demand, and unlikely to move on price.
Neither tells you whether they're right for your event. Their mixes and reviews do.
The estimate on the booking form
When you fill in a request, you'll see an Estimated Cost — your hours multiplied by this rate, excluding everything above. A sanity check, not a quote. See What "Estimated Cost" Means.
Budget filtering
The search slider filters on hourly rate. Set it above your comfortable number, since the total depends on hours and extras rather than the rate alone.
