Sharing Notes and Music Requests

Getting your music preferences and running order to your DJ is the difference between a good night and a great one. Here's where it happens.

There's no song-request list

Worth saying plainly: DJfindr doesn't have a playlist builder or a request form. Music preferences are shared two ways.

1. Your note on the booking request

The Comments field on the request form. It reaches the DJ before they quote, and it appears on your booking as the Client Note.

Good for the broad strokes: the vibe you want, genres your crowd loves or hates, and anything unusual about the event.

2. The conversation

Where the detail goes. Message your DJ as the event approaches with:

  • Must-play songs — first dance, entrance, last song
  • Do-not-play — genres, artists, or specific songs. Often more important than the must-plays
  • The running order — when speeches happen, when dinner ends, when you want the floor busy
  • Key moments — cake, bouquet, a surprise performance
  • Whether guests can request, and whether requests come through you

Keeping this in DJfindr messages means it's attached to the booking and both of you can refer back to it. See Messaging Your DJ.

The Music Requests Policy document

Some DJs attach this to the proposal. It sets out how requests are handled, when your lists need to reach them, and any limits.

If your DJ included it, read it — it tells you the deadline for getting your songs across. See The 8 Documents You May Be Asked to Complete.

When to send it

Two to three weeks before. Early enough that the DJ can source anything unusual, late enough that you've settled your running order.

A week out is fine for adjustments. The day before is too late for a song they don't own.

How much detail

A do-not-play list and five or six must-plays is usually the right amount. A full 200-track playlist removes the DJ's ability to read the room — which is the thing you're paying them for.

Say what you want the room to feel like and let them get you there.

Attachments

The conversation supports file attachments, so a running order document or a venue floor plan can go straight into the thread.
